Welcome to Hevron

The Cave of Machpelah is the world's most ancient Jewish site. The cave and the adjoining field were purchased, at full market price, by the patriarch Abraham some 3,000 years ago. The "double" cave, a mystery for at least 2,000 years, was uncovered a few years ago beneath the massive stone structure, revealing artifacts from the early Israelite period 30 centuries ago.

The structure was built above the cave during the period of King Herod to provide a place for Jewish prayer at the graves of the Patriarchs.

Typical Hebron
architecture

This impressive building, the only one in world from this period still fully intact, and fulfilling its original purpose, has over the years been used by the many invaders in the region for their own religious" purposes, including as a church by the Byzantines and Crusaders, and as a mosque by the Muslims. The Muslim Marmelukes, who conquered Hevron about 700 years ago, converted the Crusader church into a mosque, and forbade the entry of Jews into the building past the 7th step on the outside stairs.

Although the cave structure (and the city of Hevron) were liberated from the Muslims in June, 1967, Jews still struggle for prayer rights in this uniquely "Jewish" building.
