Beer Sheva, Israel's fourth largest city, lies between the southern Negev prairies and the cultivated fields to the north. It is known as the "capital of the Negev".

The city gets it's name in the Bible from the covenant made by the patriarch (Avraham) Abraham with the Philistine king, Avimelech. It literally means the well of the oath.

Israel's most successful development town, due to some extent to the presence of the Ben Gurion University of the Negev, Beer Sheva has an ancient history. It is first mentioned in the bible in connection with both Abraham and Isaac, who at different times made covenants with the King of Grar, Avimelech. Jacob too is recorded as having lived and sacrified in Beer Sheva.
